Robin Strasser Builds a House w/Habitat for Humanity this Friday

LADIES’ HOME JOURNAL TEAMS UP WITH THE HILTON FAMILY OF HOTELS AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TO HELP REBUILD SLIDELL, LOUISIANA

Magazine Brings Advertisers to New Orleans to Celebrate Jazzfest, Give Back to Gulf Coast;

Grammy-nominee Marcia Ball to Play Private Concert for Volunteers;

Star of ABC’s One Life to Live to Help With Build

April 27, 2006, NEW YORK—Ladies’ Home Journal today announced its relationship with both the Hilton Family of Hotels and Habitat for Humanity to build homes in the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged town of Slidell, Louisiana. The build, which will take place Friday, May 5 during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, will bring together over 100 of the magazine’s advertising clients and staff, as well as Hilton Family employees and executives from the region.

One Life to Live star Robin Strasser (“Dorian Lord”) will participate in the build. Marcia Ball, the Grammy-nominated “Queen of Boogie Piano,” will entertain guests after the build at a private dinner hosted by Ladies’ Home Journal at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. Ms. Ball will perform on the Hilton Harmony Piano – a priceless piece of music memorabilia signed by more than 75 artists and musicians including Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder. The piano is currently on a year-long eight-city U.S. tour to collect more signatures and will be on display at the hotel during the month of May. For every signature collected, Hilton is donating $1,000 to the GRAMMY Foundation® in support of music education.

“Ladies’ Home Journal celebrates home and family, so it is a perfect fit for us to team up with the Hilton Family of Hotels and Habitat to provide much-needed housing,” said Publisher Julie Pinkwater. “We are all thrilled not only to contribute to the Gulf Coast economy by attending Jazzfest with our clients, but more importantly to help in the rebirth of Slidell.”

The partnership between Ladies’ Home Journal and Habitat for Humanity, which began in 2003, encourages readers to help people in their communities by volunteering or donating to Habitat. According to Editor in Chief Diane Salvatore, the magazine plans to revisit Slidell in-book as Habitat achieves its goal of building 100 homes there this year.

Nancy Wood, Executive Director, East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity, said, “Ladies’ Home Journal is an amazing outlet to spread the message of Habitat. This partnership will encourage people to reach across social and economic divides to help our citizens most in need of simple, decent housing.”

“We are thrilled to work with Ladies’ Home Journal to build homes for Habitat for Humanity because it aligns perfectly with the Hilton Family core philosophy – ‘be hospitable™’ – which is filling the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality,” said Mary Beth Parks, vice president of marketing, Hilton Family of Hotels. “This relationship allows us to give back to a community that endured a tremendous loss due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, and will help families rebuild their lives.”

Even Better :)

Like I said wonderful!

I believe Robin mentioned a figure around $43,000 as having been raised for use toward the Hurrican Katrina cause. I think that's awesome and it was slow going there for awhile with the sales. I do know that she is trying to encourage people to write talk shows like Ellen so as to nationally publicize the cause and reach an even larger audience. Anybody interested in further details should click HERE

olmv.jpg FViewer is a poster on the ABC.com board who attended Girl's Night Out. The poster says Robin mentioned "she has had a problem trying to get the "One Life Many Voices" CD exposure on any talk show. She wants that venue because it reaches such a vast demographic."

FViewer started a thread on the GMA board that addresses this issue. Please take a moment and keep the thread active by posting there:

ONE LIFE MANY VOICES

Robin announced Tuesday on her hotline.jpg that she is reinvigorating her efforts toward olmv.jpg , particularly after New Orleans was hit again with another hurricane. Amid warnings that Hurricane Gustav, which crashed ashore on Monday, would be the "mother of all storms", two million people were evacuated from the state. In early analysis, the hurricane caused negligible flooding and nothing like the devastation by Katrina three years ago. Nonetheless, eight people died in the US as a result of Gustav, while Katrina claimed at least 1,800 lives.

"We've got to keep helping our friends right here in the United States of America," Robin told callers on her Hotline. She said that the OLMV Foundation has become a 501 C3 non-profit classification, which relates to tax exemption status. So far, $90,000 has been raised through a deal with Barnes & Noble, Robin's own financial backing, and with money from CD sales. The fulfillment house Robin previously dealt with has gone out of business. Consequently, Robin says that she will take personal responsibility for shipping and handling the orders.

The CDs are on sale for $10.00 each. To get the CD and enclosed portraits by Michael Easton (John McBain, OLTL), make your check payable to The One Life Many Voices Foundation and send it with an enclosed self-addressed envelop with enough postage on it for the CD (Robin thinks it's around $1.50, but she is researching it). Your order request, with the sase, should go to:
Robin Strasser,
c/o OLTL, ABC-TV
56 W. 66th Street
New York, NY 10023

*NOTE: You may also order 14 CDs for the price of $100.

Shortly after Katrina, Robin thought of something creative. She spoke to her castmates about using their collective talents on a CD that she would later produce called, "One Life Many Voices." A not-for-profit foundation was established to allow for an independent fundraising effort with 100% of net proceeds going directly to aid 2005 Hurricane Disaster Relief. Click here here: olmv.jpg to listen to a sampling of the songs but remember to send your orders to Robin at the OLTL studio.
